Ignition upgrades: fix the miss before buying parts

A shiny ignition box cannot rescue a loose ground, damaged plug wire or distributor that is wrong for the engine.

Establish a healthy baseline

Check plugs, wire routing, connections, charging voltage and mechanical condition before selecting an upgrade. Record the existing ignition model and follow its diagnostic instructions. Disconnect power before rewiring.

Choose compatible components

Coils, ignition boxes and distributors are a system. Some combinations require a ballast resistor; others must not use one. Use the wiring diagram for the exact part numbers rather than a generic internet sketch.

Check timing with the right procedure

Base timing, advance curves and vacuum advance depend on the engine combination. Follow the engine builder’s recommendation. Multi-spark systems can confuse some dial-back timing lights; verify tool compatibility before trusting a reading.

Finish the installation properly

Keep ignition wiring away from heat and moving components, secure the harness and use the specified terminals and grounds. A rev limiter is not a substitute for appropriate engine limits. Recheck everything before road use.
